Abstract

[Also in Division B3] Apparatus for altering the cross-sections of hollow, thermally deformable members, having a longitudinal axis, e.g. plastics or metal pipes, comprises a mould having an outer part, a multicomponent inner part which comprises an alternating arrangement of equal numbers of segments of large and smaller size which together form a continuous mould surface, and a conical core engaging with the inner part of the mould and longitudinally displaceable therein so that said longitudinal movement radially displaces the segments to form a continuous core. As shown the apparatus comprises an outer mould part comprising two sections 1 and 7 separated by a cavity 6 for heating fluid, an inner mould section comprising segments 2 and 2a and a core 3. The core and inner mould section are movable relative to each other by a double acting cylinder 4. The core 3 has eight inclined faces each equipped with a groove and dovetails on the segments 2 and 2a engage these grooves. The faces are inclined so that as the core moves into the inner mould part, the segments 2a are forced outwards at a greater rate than segments 2 and force the material to be shaped 9 into contact with the outer mould 7. To ensure even pressing, the inner mould section can be turned relative to the outer and the outer section 1 is preferably hinged to aid removal. When only part of the hollow article is to be shaped, the inner mould section may be shorter than the outer and the material of the hollow article may be forced outwards against a rubber membrane which is forced inwards by the heating fluid, circulating in the cavity 6 of the outer mould section. Preferred materials for the hollow article are the polymers of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene, caprolactam and polycondensates of diamines with dicarboxylic acids and of diols with dicarboxylic acids.
