Abstract

1498957 Folding edges of non-metallic sheet material H-H KUPER 9 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973] 53111/74 Heading B5K [Also in Division D1] Edge regions of two sheets 10 are joined by stitching the regions together to form a seam 25 parallel to and spaced from each edge to be joined to leave two edge strips 10a; folding each strip 10a to lie flat against the respective sheet 10; applying a thread 16 of thermoplastic adhesive within each fold; and pressing each edge region to bend the adhesive thereto. The sheets 10, e.g. of textile fabric, leather, artificial leather, plastics, paper, cardboard or wood material, are fed continuously by conveyer members 13, 14, e.g. two rollers of which at least one, preferably the lower, is driven, an upper pressure shoe and a lower roller, or two endless belts or chains, to a device 15 for folding over the strips 10a and devices 17 for feeding the threads 16 into the folds. The device 15 comprises a guide 21 having curved folding surfaces 21a and secured to a rod 22 pivotable on a body 19 by a screw 23. Each device 17 is pivotable about a screw 24 on the body 19 and comprises a heatable guide tube, which may include an electrical heating element, for the thread 16 fed from the reel 16a. Each tube is inclined towards the guide 21 and towards the nip between the rollers 13, 14. Preferably, each thread 16 is a transparent glass or silk thread coated with a thermoplastic adhesive or the entire thread is made of a thermoplastic adhesive. Instead of by heating the tubes electrically, the threads may be heated by hot air. In use, the sheets 10 are fed continuously by the members 13, 14 and the guide 21 runs with its lower edge 21b between the raised strips 10a which are folded over by the surfaces 21a. During this folding, tube outlets 17a guide the threads 16 with the adhesive thereon heatactivated on to the sheets 10. The members 13, 14 press the strips 10a firmly against the sheets 10 with the threads 16 therebetween.
