Abstract

An annular intermediate part (4) and side parts (2, 3) fixed to it form the housing (1) of the differential. The housing is pivotably mounted on hollow journals (2a, 3a) and driven by a pinion meshing with an annular gear (22) fixed on the intermediate part (4). Differential bevel gears (17) rotate about journals (16) fixed in a sleeve (15) and mesh with bevel gears (10, 12) rotating with axle shafts (8, 11). Thrust bearings (18) for the differential gears (17) are guided in slots (4a) parallel to the axle (20) so that they are displaceable but cannot rotate. In this way, increased wear caused by positional changes of the axle shaft bevel gears due to abrasion processes or manufacturing inaccuracies can be reduced. When designed as limited-slip differential the bevel gear (10) can be connected by way of toothing (7a, 10a) disengaging the gear (10) and a coupling gear (7) at high torques. In light trucks, friction rings (23-26) are sufficient, of which some (24, 25) are rotationally fixed to the intermediate part (4) and the others (23, 26) to the assigned gear (7 and 12). In passenger vehicles the friction rings (23-26) can be replaced by thrust bearings. <IMAGE>
