Abstract

1497599 Welding by fusion MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 23 Dec 1975 52605/75 Heading B3R [Also in Division H2] In submerged-arc welding, four continuously fed consumable electrodes 12-15 disposed in line ahead are energized by way of two pairs of transformers coupled in respective Scott connections to a multiphase (preferably three phase) A.C. supply, the two terminals of each of the transformer secondary windings 28-31 being respectively connected to one of the electrodes and to the workpiece. The invention may be applied to welding ship panels or to longitudinal or helical welding of tubes (which may be initially externally MIG/MAG tack welded). The welding may be single or multi-layer. As shown, the electrode 12 is connected to the "beginning" of the secondary winding 28, and the electrodes 13-15 to the "ends" of the secondary windings 29-31. In Fig. 1(b) (not shown), the electrodes 12, 15 are connected to the "beginnings" of the secondary windings 28, 31 and the electrodes 13, 14 to the "ends" of the secondary windings 29, 30. : The Specification discloses examples of electrode current, voltage, diameter, "stickout", presentation angle and spacing, welding speed, joint dimensions of two-side welding, seam width, penetration and reinforcement. Low alloy electrodes containing Mo are referred to.
