Abstract
149,741. Parsons, Sir C. A., and Cook, S. S. May 15, 1919. Packing, non-metallic.-Packing for rotating bodies, such as the rotor shafts of steam turbines, is made of carbon or like graphitic material enclosed in a casing or moulded on a skeleton frame, of metal having a coefficient of expansion substantially the same as that of carbon, such as nickel steel or an alloy of lead and antimony. In the example shown in Fig. 2, the carbon a is moulded into an internally serrated casing b, the carbon projecting at c on the concave face to make contact with the rotating shaft; and in that shown in Fig. 6, the carbon is moulded on a skeleton frame g. In further modifications, reinforcing metal frames with radial ribs of perforated sheet. metal, or of wire, are used.
