Abstract

486,340. Elastic - fluid turbines. RODER, K. March 1, 1937, Nos. 6118, 6119, and 6120. Convention dates, Feb. 29, 1936, Oct. 9, 1936, and Nov. 4, 1936. [Class 110 (iii)] A steam turbine has a guide blade carrier a, which though subdivided in at least one axial plane, is formed as a true body of revolution, i.e. any section in a plane at right-angles to the axis of rotation of the rotor b is a true circle, and is held in position by one or more supporting members d, d<1>, lying in the steam space and themselves constituting true bodies of revolution, the carrier and the supporting member or members being so assembled that the subdivided carrier as a whole acts as an undivided true body of revolution. One of the supporting members d<2> may be constituted by a single unit, i.e. a ring or it may be subdivided in an axial plane at right-angles to the plane of subdivision of the carrier. One of the supporting members c<1> may also be carried by an internal annular wall c<11> integral and concentric with the housing. The shape, size and position in the flow of steam of the supporting members are so chosen that they will respond to temperature variations more rapidly than the adjacent parts of the rotor so that during starting up when the temperature changes are large the clearances will first increase and then decrease. The materials from which the carrier parts and the rotor are made preferably have approximately the same coefficient of expansion. The casing is so arranged that those parts, i.e. steam connections, which cause the housing to deviate from a true body of revolution are so arranged that any deformation of the housing on one side is balanced out by an equal deformation on the other side.
