Abstract
993,711. Turbines. ROTAX Ltd. Dec. 27, 1961 [Jan. 24, 1961], No. 2720/61. Heading F1T. In a turbine which comprises a rotor having secured to its periphery at angularly-spaced positions a plurality of relatively light and readily fracturable blades, the rotor is disposed within a housing which is covered at its downstream end by means of a pair of apertured plates which are arranged in spaced relation. The turbine shown is suitable for use as an engine starter and comprises a casing 5 which houses gearing by which the output shaft 6 is driven. The turbine also comprises a rotor 8 secured to or formed integrally with a shaft 7, the rotor carrying at its periphery blades 9 which may be formed of aluminium alloy, the turbine being driven by air under pressure supplied through inlet 11 to the annular chamber 12. The rotor is contained within a housing comprising an inner housing 13 and an outer housing 14, the housing 14 being formed in two parts 14a, 14b. A dished cover 15 is secured at the downstream end of the housing 13, the cover being formed with a central hexagonal aperture 15a and with a plurality of smaller circular apertures 15b. A dished cover 16 is also secured at the downstream end of the outer housing 14, the cover 16 being formed with a plurality of small circular holes 16a which are out of register with the holes 15b. A spider member 17 comprising a central portion 17b and three radial arms 17c is disposed at the downstream side of the cover 16. A member 19 is secured to the central portion 17b of the spider member, the member 19 carrying a ball 20 which is adapted to prevent axial movement of the rotor 8 in the event of failure of the rotor shaft or of failure of the shaft bearing. The cover plates 15, 16 serve to retain a blade should it become detached from the rotor.
