Abstract

1497401 Turbo-brakes DEFENCE SECRE- TARY OF STATE FOR 8 July 1975 [19 July 1974] 32194/74 Heading F2E A turbo-brake comprises a rotary gas compressor the discharge from which is directed so as to oppose rotation of a bladed or pocketed rotary brake connected to the compressor. As shown a single rotor 1 is formed with compressor blades 9 and pockets 13, air from the compressor passing to chamber 4 and thence via nozzles 7 tangentially against pockets 13. The brake may be applied to a turbine driven road vehicle, the rotor shaft 6 being connected to the output shaft of the power turbine via a hydraulic clutch and step-up gearing (Fig. 2, not shown), or to a turbine driven helicopter.
