Abstract

1497268 Afterburners HONDA GIKEN KOGYO KK 24 Dec 1974 [29 Dec 1973 (2) 23 April 1974] 55878/74 Heading F4B [Also in Division F1] An intake and exhaust apparatus for a multicylinder engine having the cylinders arranged in at least one bank comprises an exhaust gas reaction chamber housing 17, a member 16 defining an exhaust gas reaction chamber, a plurality of conduits 17 arranged to receive exhaust gases from the cylinders and opening into the reaction chamber, an intake manifold 21, 22 formed within top closure member 18 of the housing and an exhaust gas opening 29, in the top wall of member 16, which is arranged to direct exhaust gas at a portion of the intake manifold. Member 16 includes an inner wall 16a and an outer laminated heatinsulating wall 16b. Baffle 31 directs exhaust gas entering through adjacent conduit 27 towards the end of the chamber remote from outlet pipe 28, to increase the residence time of the gases within the chamber. Housing 17 includes channels 19 for liquid coolant and a heat shield 20. The inlet manifold includes a main carburettor which discharges a lean air/ fuel mixture into duct 21, 21<SP>1</SP> which leads the mixture to a main combustion chamber of a cylinder, and an auxiliary carburetter 24 which discharges a rich air/fuel mixture into duct 22, 22<SP>1</SP> which leads the mixture to a pre-combustion chamber associated with the main combustion chamber. Exhaust gas issuing through opening 29 heats the inlet manifold and then passes through hole 30 to pipe 28. In the embodiment described the apparatus is situated between the cylinder banks of a V-engine.
