Abstract
Intake and exhaust apparatus for a spark ignition piston internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders arranged in two "V" shaped groups, particularly for an engine of the type in which each cylinder comprises a main combustion defined above a piston and an auxiliary combustion chamber connected to the main combustion chamber through a flame passage, said apparatus for the reaction of exhaust gases comprising a chamber housing for the reaction of exhaust gases arranged to be placed between the two groups of cylinders, an exhaust gas reaction chamber accommodated in said exhaust gas reaction chamber housing, and a plurality of exhaust ducts arranged to receive hot exhaust gases from the cylinders and that each have a discharge end that communicates with said reaction chamber, characterized in that an intake manifold (21, 22) is arranged above the reaction chamber housing (17), said manifold having a portion (21', 22') thereof located above said reaction chamber (16), said reaction chamber (16) having an upper wall including a heat insulating layer (25) in at least a part thereof, said upper wall of the chamber having an exhaust outlet (29) disposed therein for directing exhaust gas to said portion (21', 22') of said intake manifold (21, 22).
