Abstract

1432916 Heating I C engine charge FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 29 April 1974 [4 May 1973] 18585/74 Heading F1B An I.C. engine intake manifold comprises spaced upper and lower walls 32, 34 defining a plenum 36, the upper wall having an air/fuel mixture inlet 38 from a carburetter 10, the inlet being connected to the plenum by a thin sheet metal high heat-transfer tube 46, and a portion of the lower wall comprising a thin sheet metal high heattransfer plate 56 against which liquid fuel splashes and becomes vaporized. The tube 46 and the plate 56 are heated by exhaust gas passing through a crossover passage 60, some of the exhaust gas passing around the tube 46 and the remainder passing downwardly through an opening 80 and then being deflected by a member 78 into contact with the underside of the plate 56 (which is corrugated to improve the heat-transfer) before passing upwardly again through an opening 86. As shown, there may be two tubes 46, in conjunction with dual induction passages 18. Any liquid fuel running down the tube walls is deflected by a conical end-piece 50 towards the centre of the stream for better mixing and atomization. Individual passages (52), Fig. 1 (not shown) run horizontally from the plenum 36 to each of the eight cylinders.
