Abstract
1497041 Temperature sensors BRITISH STEEL CORP 19 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 59306/73 Heading G1D A temperature sensor for measuring the surface temperatures of, for example, metal slabs in a reheating surface, comprises a housing 14 having an open upper end, a member 16 providing a radiation receiving surface and being in thermal contact with the housing 14 and closing the open end of the housing, as shown, the member 16 having connected thereto a first thermocouple 22 at the geometrical centre thereof and a second thermocouple 24 laterally spaced therefrom. At least one such sensor may be located within a reheating furnace which is provided with means for supporting metal slabs during their movement through the furnace, and a plurality of heat sources, the sensors being disposed at a level below the top of the supporting means. The member 16 is preferably a thin metal disc welded at its periphery to a shoulder 20 provided in the upper open end of the housing 14. A lower open end of the housing 14 may be mounted on a water cooled support system 12 comprising coaxial tubes 18, 18a. Heat flow is preferably substantially radial through the member 16, there being provided, in the described embodiment, thermal insulating material 26 within and below member 16 and refractory material 28 about the housing 14 up to the level of the upper end thereof. The housing 14 may have a cylindrical outer surface and a cup shaped inner surface.
