Abstract

1409251 Temperature indication in furnaces BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 20 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 59655/71 Heading F4B [Also in Division G1] A continuous slab reheating furnace with a plurality of upper and lower burners 10 and water cooled skids 12 with support rails 27 has a number of temperature measuring devices 26 spaced along the furnace and disposed below the top of the rails closely adjacent the undersides of slabs 14 each device incorporating a plate 34 with its flat radiation receiving surface 36 substantially shielded from ambient radiation and disposed within a cylindrical housing 28. The latter is connected to a cross-member 16 by a sleeve 30 and surrounded by thermal insulation 32. A cylindrical member 48 carries the plate 34 with its flat radiation receiving surface 36 surrounded by thermal insulation 38, said surface 36 in use being disposed 1-3 cms below the top of rails 27. A thermocouple 40 is disposed in the plate 34 with its leads 50 passing through a plug 48 and through thermal insulation 52. Member 48 is packed with insulating material.
