Abstract

1429769 Thermocouple mountings BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 15 June 1973 [16 June 1972] 28364/72 Heading H1K [Also in Division G1] A temperature sensor for use in a furnace to measure the temperature of a steel slab S comprises a housing 10 having a plane metal temperature sensing element 12 at one end thereof and another plane metal temperature sensing element 14 spaced from the element 12 inwardly of the housing, the elements being insulated from the housing 10. As shown, each element 12, 14 comprises a metal disc which is intimately associated with a thermocouple 12a or 14a and which is supported by a 3- limbed web 22 or 24 from the housing. The thermocouple leads are arranged to extend axially from the housing 10 through semicircular end closure plates 16. The housing 10, which is surrounded by a sleeve 18 of insulating material and filled with insulating material 20 may be supported on a water-cooled mounting M beneath the path of the slab S through the furnace. The sensor may be provided with additional temperature sensing elements, e.g. 34 for sensing heat received from element 12, the different values sensed by the different elements being suitably combined to indicate the temperature of the slab S.
