Abstract
1495870 Crank-case ventilation in IC engines FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 4 Feb 1976 04346/76 Heading F1B In a crank-case ventilation system, oil-laden blowby gases only flow through an air-filter 31 at high engine loads. An oil-filler cap 1, Fig. 3 has a spigot 2 which is connected to a rocker box 32, Fig. 1, by a pipe 33 along which blowby gases flow leaving a crank-case 28. In the cap 1 connections are provided at 24 to the air-filter 31, at 15 to the crank-case 28 and at 9 to an induction manifold 26. The latter connection 9 has a throttle member 10, connection 15 is controlled by a lightly sprung valve 18 and an umbrella valve 14 lies between connection 9 and the other two connections 15, 24. At low engine loads, blowby gases are sucked by manifold vacuum through connection 9 and throttle 10 (via a filter 7), the valve 18 opening under the suction and allowing fresh air from filter 31 and connection 24 to enter and ventilate the crank-case 28 via connection 15. At higher loads, the production of blowby gases becomes so great that the throttle 10 does not allow them to escape completely; thus building up pressure in the crank-case 28, which closes valve 18 and opens umbrella valve 14 venting the blowby gases to the air-filter 31 via connection 24.
