Abstract
1495069 Sound insulation B KIRSCH 28 Aug 1975 [28 Aug 1974] 35617/75 Heading F2X A noise-suppression housing for an I.C. engine and generator unit comprises a horizontal base 1 which carries vertical side walls 2, 3 at opposite ends, and a cover 9 of U-shaped cross-section which is movable relative to the base 1, the free ends of the cover 9 fitting over the edges of the base 1 which extend perpendicularly to the end-walls 2, 3. Coolant air is supplied via openings 5, 6 in the end-walls 2, 3 and removed via an opening 4 in the base 1. The cover 9 is fitted with rollers 10 which roll or slide in guide rails 8 along the sides of the base 1. The base 1, the end-walls 2, 3 and the cover 9 are each of double-walled construction with the space between the wall members divided by vertical partitions 11a, 11b to form chambers for housing sound-insulating material, e.g. concrete or soft or permanently plastic material such as bitumen, gypsum, asphalt cement or asphalt. Air chambers also may be provided. One or more closable extraction openings 16 are provided near the bottom ends of the wall members which the chambers so that the filling materials may be removed, if required. The sound level inside the relatively small housing is high and because of the different types of noise prevailing in the interior the sound is of different frequencies and comes from different sources. Thus, it is advantageous for a different sound-insulating material to be used on the inner walls of the cover and the end-walls from that used in the interior or near the outer walls. In Fig. 3a, the chambers formed in the cover 9 are filled with the following materials: concrete with a moulded layer of papier-mÔchÚ 18 nearest the inside of the cover (chamber 17), glass-fibre with metal inlays (chamber 22), glass wool (chamber 23) and sand of different granular sizes (chambers 19, 20 and 21). The inside face of chamber 21 is formed by plywood or a corrugated plastics material such as PVC. In a further embodiment (Fig. 3b not shown), the inside wall of the cover is clad with corrugated, perforated sheet metal or iwth perforated acoustic tiles, the remainder of the material forming the cover being selected from the materials used in the embodiment of Fig. 3a
