Abstract

1495016 Discharging waste oil from marine vessels J Z C PAVLOU 14 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974] 45518/74 Heading B7M Oily water to be discharged from a marine vessel flows through a pipe 40, 44 into which flows clean water ballast through a pipe 42, the mixture being discharged to the sea through a discharge pipe 46 providing the amount of oil in the mixture does not exceed a pre-set limit at which a valve 8 closes. The amount of oil in the mixture is measured by an ultra-violet sensor (not shown) supplied with a sample of the mixture through a probe 38. If the amount of oil exceeds the limit the valve 8 in the discharge pipe 46 is automatically hydraulically actuated. To decrease the amount of oil a remotely controlled hydraulically actuated valve 14 is operated to increase the flow of ballast water. A graphical record of the amount of oil discharged is obtained from readings transmitted by the sensor.
