1494581 Coated expandable vinyl aromatic polymer particles SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 18 Feb 1976 [6 Feb 1975] 5082/75 Heading C3C [Also in Division B2] Coated expandable particles of a polymer of a vinyl aromatic compound of formula where R 1 is a phenyl group which may be substituted by halogen or alkyl and R 2 is H or alkyl, are made by applying to the expandable particles a coating comprising a partial ester of trimethylolpropane with a C 14-20 fatty acid together with an anti-agglomerant metal salt. In the examples expandable beads of polystyrene containing a mixture of n- and isopentane were dry coated with a mixture of trimethylolpropane distearate and zinc stearate or calcium phosphate; the coated beads were then pre-expanded using a steam/air mixture aged and moulded in steam-heated closed moulds.
