Abstract

1409285 Coated expandable particles SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 6 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56731/ 72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Coated expandable particles of a polymer of a vinyl or vinylidene aromatic compound are made by contacting the expandable particles with a coating composition comprising a glyceryl C 16-20 carboxylate and a metal stearate. Suitable vinyl aromatic compounds are styrene, α-methyl stryrene, vinyl toluenes, and halogen substituted styrenes. The coating ingredients may be applied separately or, preferably, together as a slurry or solution. In the examples expandable beads of polystyrene containing a mixture of n- and iso-pentane were dry coated with mixtures of glyceryl and sodium and/or zinc stearate. Potassium or calcium stearate may also be used as the metal stearate.
