Abstract

1408267 Coated foamable particles SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 20 Nov 1972 [22 Nov 1971] 54139/71 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Particles of an expandable polymer of a vinyl or vinylidene aromatic compound containing a vaporisable expanding agent of b.p. below 100‹C and which has no solvent action on the polymer, are coated with (a) a waterinsoluble ester of glycerol and a C 10-40 fatty acid and (b) an inorganic finely-divided solid. In the examples polystyrene expandable beads are coated with a mixture of finely-divided magnesium carbonate, olive oil, lauric diethanol amide, poly-N-vinyl pyrollidone (as an adhesive) and isopropanol, the beads are dried, pre-expanded with steam and then moulded in a steam-heated mould.
