Abstract
1494352 Producing acicular ferromagnetic powder PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Dec 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 53124/74 Heading C7D In the production of an acicular ferromagnetic powder consisting at least predominantly of Fe, an iron oxide powder or iron oxide hydrate powder (FeOOH) is reduced by a gaseous reducing agent predominantly composed of H 2 at 300‹-600‹C. The volume of reducing gas (calculated at 0‹C and 1 atm.) per hour per g Fe (in the material to be reduced) is at least equal to (0À4 x T) - 120 (where T=reaction temp). The reaction preferably takes place in a fluidized bed, or in a furnace having tilting frames Fig. 1 (not shown), or the material may pass downwardly through the gas, being carried in a zig-zag manner on a succession of gas-permeable belts. The ferromagnetic powder may contain Ge, Sn, Al, Ag, Ni and Co as additives.
