Abstract

1493607 Piston and valve sub-assemblies for shock absorbers JONAS WOODHEAD Ltd 27 Nov 1974 51453/74 Heading F2S An hydraulic shock absorber has a valve which in the absence of the piston-rod forms a coherent sub-assembly with the piston. This facilitates testing of the valve. The valve includes a stack of coaxial spring discs which are trapped on the piston by a sleeve 40 and control flow in both directions through passages 28 in the piston. A valve disc 46 seats against a lip 48 on the piston and opens on downward flow through the passages, and a valve disc 60 seats on the disc 46 and opens to allow upward flow through the passages. The valve is substantially as described and claimed in Specification 1,482,813. The sleeve 40 securing the valve on the piston has an enlarged portion 42 at the top, and at the bottom a reduced wall thickness facilitating spreading of the sleeve after the discs and a backing washer 44 have been placed in position. The piston is secured on a smaller diameter portion 68 of the piston-rod either by deforming part of the piston-rod outwardly into engagement with the sleeve 40 as shown, or (not shown) a separate annular retainer which bears against the backing washer 44 is swaged into a groove in the piston-rod.
