Abstract

1492739 Coal digests COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 25 Nov 1974 [12 Dec 1973] 57609/73 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] In a process for the production of a coal digest by digesting a non-hydrogenated coal, coal tar or pitch with a solvent at an elevated temperature, filtering the resultant digest at an elevated temperature and concentrating the filtrate, the digestion is effected at a temperature and for a time such that the undissolved material has a particle size and character such that a filter cake is formed which has a resistivity of less than 20 technical units. Coal can be digested in a solvent boiling within the range 180-400‹ C, e.g. anthracene oil, at at least 350‹ C for a period of 5 mins.-1¢ hours at a solvent/coal weight ratio between 5 and 2 and then filtered at at least 150‹ C. The digest can be diluted either with more solvent or with a lower boiling oil, e.g. a coal tar fraction, prior to filtration. The coal digest is suitable for coking to produce electrodes.
