Abstract
1,154,846. Electrode coke. F. B. BRIGGS (Verkaufsvereinigung fur Teererzeugnisse A.G. ). 7 June, 1966, No. 25388/66. Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] A coke having anisotropic properties and a crystalline orientation is made by conventional coking of a hard pitch obtained by distilling, with or without air-blowing, certain distillation products of coal tar. Three such products are named, namely: (1) anthracene oil; (2) normal coal tar pitch, i.e. having a softening point around 70‹ C., Kramer-Samow, which has been freed of soot-like ingredients, e.g. by filtering; and (3) a pitch distillate obtained from normal coal tar pitch in making a hard pitch therefrom. The hard pitch used in the coking should have a softening point of 180‹ to 200‹ C., and preferably a sulphur content of less than 1% b.w. Sooty ingredients in product (2) should not exceed 1% b.w. A graphite electrode may be produced in the usual way from the resulting coke and electrode pitch.
