Abstract

Cold and heat retaining chambers, vessels, and the like.-A vessel for storing or conveying liquefied gases, including hydrogen, consists of a plurality of hollow tapering shells with air-tight walls a, b; c, d; e, f; g, h, made of material such as metal or papier mÔchÚ and filled with gas and heat-insulating material such as feathers, cork dust, &c., the density of which is selected to produce the best insulating effect. Circulating spaces are left between the shells, and the liquefied gas that evaporates in the innermost vessel passes through the apertures k, l, m, and n to the atmosphere; small pipes o, p, q, and r, communicating with the interior of the shells, are provided through which gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen, nitric-oxide, and carbonic-acid respectively may be injected, these gases being such that their point of condensation is a little below the average temperature existing in the corresponding space. The thickness of the shells is so arranged that it differs at various points proportionally to the difference in temperature between the inner and cuter surface thereat. To vary the rate of evaporation, the gas instead of passing to the atmosphere through the aperture n is caused to pass through other tubes (not shown) which communicate with suitable parts of the circulating spaces.
