Cigarette-making machines.-A cigarette-making machine is provided with means for opening and teasing-out the tobacco in the hopper, comprising two sets of fingers which grip the tobacco, carry it through the hopper with an oscillating motion, release it, and return to the other end of the hopper to take up another lot of tobacco. The fingers n are pivoted on a shaft d mounted on a carriage operated by a reciprocating arm band running on rollers e<1> on ways g', 'g, h<1>, h, g<3>. The ways g<1>, g are rack-shaped as shown, so as to give a jogging motion to the carriage as it passes over them. The carriage passes along the ways g', g, with the fingers n gripping the tobacco, until it is clear of the way h'. A star-wheel k on the carriage then strikes against a stop i, and causes a cam o to open the fingers n, so that the tobacco drops into the hopper. The way h<1>, which is pivoted, drops as soon as the carriage has passed from under it, so that the carriage on its return journey mounts the way h' and runs along the way h on to the way g<3>, which, being carried by the pivoted way g', falls under the weight of the carriage into the position shown by the dotted lines; the carriage returns along the ways g<1>, g. When the carriage has reached its rearmost position, the wheel k engages with a stop q and the cam o moves so as to close the fingers n. The stop q is carried on a weighted lever so that it moves with the carriage as the latter falls and then returns to its original position.
