Abstract

1491038 Printers TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 16 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973 28 Dec 1973] 54162/74 Heading G4H A thermal printing system for actuating a plurality of groups of thermal printing elements, said elements in each one of said groups being similarly arranged to enable the generation of a character representation upon the selective actuation of the elements, includes means for storing a plurality of data words representing the characters to be printed, means for converting the plurality of words into a plurality of character printing codes and for reading out a selected bit from each of the codes, and means for actuating selected elements in response to the state of the selected bit from each of the codes. As disclosed, a line of 20 characters is printed, each character from a 7 x 5 dot matrix, using a line of 20 x 5 thermal printing elements past which the paper is stepped (orthogonally to the line of elements). At each position of the paper, five 20-element groups are selected in turn to respond to the parallel output of a 20-bit shift register fed serially from a ROM which is addressed by the data words for the line repeatedly in conjunction with dot matrix row and column selection signals to perform the conversion.
