Abstract

1473627 Printers EXTEL CORP 25 April 1975 [17 May 1974] 17388/75 Heading G4H A control system for a dot-matrix printer uses a main character generator for controlling dot printer elements (e.g. a column of them) to print standard characters in a basic format using groups of dot-position columns separated by blank columns, and has means detecting special symbols unsuited to the basic format (e.g. fractions, weather symbols) in input storage receiving the data stream to be printed to cause encoding means to supply a series of code words to the main character generator, each code word representative of a part of a special symbol, which part is reproducible in the basic format, the encoding means also actuating an auxiliary character generator for controlling the dot printer elements to complete the special symbol by printing in the "blank" columns of the basic format.
