Abstract

1490991 Discharge method for determination of metal constituents BRITISH STEEL CORP 8 Jan 1975 [9 Jan 1974] 00999/74 Heading G1B [Also in Division H1] The amount of a specific substituent in a metal body 4 is determined by a method comprising oxidizing a portion of the surface of the metal body by means of an electrical discharge between the surface of the metal body and an adjacent electrode 3 in a free-oxygen containing atmosphere, and quantitatively determining the oxide content of the specific constituent in the fumes formed by the oxidation. In the apparatus shown, air is drawn by means of a pump (not shown) through vessel 5 which contains anhydrone vessel 6 which contains soda-asbestos, probe assembly 1, U-tube 8 which contains anhydrone, manganese dioxide and Sch³tze reagent (silica gel impregnated with iodine pentoxide) to coulometric analyzer 9 which determines the carbon dioxide content of the gas stream.
