Abstract

1283712 Electro-chemical analysis BRITISH STEEL CORP 16 Sept 1970 [17 June 1969] 30667/69 Heading G1N In a solid electrolyte probe for measuring oxygen in liquid metal the electrolyte may be porous and a constant low oxygen partial pressure is maintained at the reference electrode e.g. by using powdered graphite, which forms small voids to absorb any oxygen leaking through the electrolyte. As shown silica tube 4 is plugged by zirconia 5 and encloses graphite rod 6 dipping into graphite powder 7 below alumina 8. A mild steel contact rod 10 is mounted in the refractory head. The usual fugitive cap 14 and protective cardboard tube may be provided. The zirconia plug is formed with a fugitive binder which is driven off by heating.
