Abstract

1,242,811. 811. Electro-chemical analysis. BROKEN HILL PROPRIETARY CO. Feb.16, 1970 [Feb.19, 1969], No.7414/70. Heading G1N. The invention relates to a solid electrolyte dipper-probe for determining oxygen in e.g. molten steel (which forms one of the electrodes). The ELECTROLYTE is in the form of a THIN COATING 1, applied to the main tube 2 of alumina or silica by e.g. flame-spraying, plasma-spraying, sputtering, vapour deposition, or slip casting and sintering. METHOD OF MAKING: a four bore alumina tube 2 (about 3 m.m. O/D) is surface roughened for 1¢'' (e.g. by grit blasting) and the end face hollowed. A Pt/PtRh thermocouple 4 is placed in position with the leads through bores b, d, and a loop of nylon string 7 through bores a, c, and the hollow end is filled with platinun paste 3. After air drying and before firing, the nylon string is removed to leave a reference gas bore. Finally the electrolyte coating 1 is applied. Alternatively Fig. 1B (not shown) porous sintered chromium which oxidizes in use may be used to provide the reference. The probe is illustrated mounted as an expandable plug-in element in a dipper casing and protected by a fugitive steel cap Fig. 2 (not shown).
