Abstract
The parent patent described specific electrodes for electrochemical estimation of the concns. of SO2, NO2 or NO individually as components of a gas stream entering and leaving a cell. SO2 is detected by use of an active carbon electrode, NO2 or NO by gold electrodes operating at different electrode potentials. This addition describes a composite electrode comprising a thin carbon layer which is permeable to gas, hydrophobic and electrically conductive and which also carries a thin coating of gold. The composite electrodes may be used for measurement of SO2, NO2 or NO in the range 5-0.01ppm, both reducing mfg. variety and cell complexity and increasing the sensitivity of a typical 3-electrode cell. Requires use of less gold than the former unsupported gold electrodes.
