Abstract

In an electroanalytical cell of the type used for measuring the concentration of an electroactive component, such as oxygen, in a gaseous or liquid fluid, by measuring the current between working electrode 210 and counter electrode 220 in contact with an electrolyte 299 and with a semipermeable membrane 24 separating the electrolyte from the fluid; a third guard electrode 230 is provided in contact with the electrolyte, and between the working and counter electrodes. The third electrode can be held at a potential that is effective to protect the surface of the working- electrode 210 from undesired currents and stray electronic contributions; that potential preferably being substantially the same potential as that of the working-electrode. This provides for a substantially increased accuracy of measurement, a considerable extension of the measurement range toward lower gas concentrations, less sensitivity of the cell to shocks or vibrations, and a simplification of the transient response of the cell. <IMAGE>
