Abstract

Overlap joints with packing compressed radially on assembly.-A coupling for joining two flexible or inflexible pipes or tubes which is especially applicable for joining fragile tubes such as silica tubes used in connexion with combustion furnaces is formed with a tubular sleeve as 1, Fig. 1, with abutments 2, 2<a> on either end, against which act the ends of elastic packing- sleeves 9, 10, which are inserted into the ends of the tubes 12 to be connected. The sleeves 9, 10 are compressed in order to grip the interiors of the tubes 12 by means of nuts 5, 6, arranged on the screwed sleeve 1, washers 7, 8 being interposed between the nuts and the packing sleeves. The ends of the tubes 12 may be protected by metal sleeves 11. For connecting two tubes of different diameters the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 is employed. The large tube 12 is gripped internally by a packing sleeve 9 which is compressed against an abutment 2 on a shortened tubular member 1 by means of a nut 5 and washer 7. The member 1 is formed with an internal abutment 2<a>, and with an internal thread to receive a screwed gland 6 which compresses a packing-sleeve 10 to cause it to grip the exterior of a small tube 12. According to the Provisional Specification a single stuffing-box joint as described above may be employed, and it is stated that the washers employed are preferably of D- section, and that they fit on correspondinglyshaped flattened parts of the member as 1.
