Abstract
1490723 Neutralizing gluten J J PHELAN and P F FOTTRELL 29 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973 20 March 1974] 46672/74 Heading A5B [Also in Division A2] Preparations, e.g. tablets, for use by people lacking the ability to metabolise gluten in their food comprise (a) a carbohydrase enzyme obtained by fermentation of the fungus Aspergillus niger and (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The enzyme may be prepared by (a) growing A. niger in a liquid culture medium (b) removing the mycelium, (c) precipitating the enzyme from the culture medium, (d) dissolving the precipitated enzyme in a buffer solution, (e) passing the solution through an ion-exchange resin, (f) discarding a first run of eluate equal to the bulk volume of the resin and (g) collecting a second run of eluate equal to 1.5 times the volume of the resin.
