Abstract

1490431 Fertile period or pregnancy test implement ALZA CORP 24 March 1975 12163/75 Heading G1B A fertile period or pregnancy test implement comprises an absorbent carrier containing an acid pH buffer and an N-acetyl-beta-d glucosaminide, the glucosaminide reacting with enhanced levels of a glucosaminidase in a female biological liquid such as saliva at the acid pH to give a reaction product which when the female is fertile or not pregnant has a distinct colour at another pH. The absorbent carrier material may be a filter paper, cellulose strip, wood strip, felt, porous ceramic strip, velour, cloth. The glucosaminide may be a colourless phenolic (aryl hydroxy) derivative which reacts at an acid pH (4-5) to form a phenol which has a colour at an alkaline pH (8-11). In use, the test implement may be touched with saliva, then after 20-40 minutes the implement is wetted with for example pH 9-11 buffer and inspected for colour change. The test may be carried out in solution using the glucosaminide dissolved in the acid buffer solution.
