1490129 Furnace walls BUTTERLEY BUILDING MATERIALS Ltd 6 May 1976 [23 May 1975] 22947/75 Heading F4B [Also in Division E1] In a composite furnace wall 11 comprising a support framework 14, an outer wall 30 and an inner wall 25 of heat resistant blocks 26 spaced from said outer wall, anchoring devices extend between the inner wall and the support framework to anchor at least some of the blocks 26 to the framework 14. As shown each anchoring device comprises a tie-bar 32 engaging one leg 28 of an inverted U-shaped metal anchoring member 24, the other leg of which engages a hole 52 in an associated block 26b of the inner wall. The tie bars 32, which extend through the outer wall 30 and through bracing bars 9 welded to the framework 14, have a screwthreaded end portion 32a engaged by a nut 56 and washer 55. The inner wall is constructed from lightweight refractory concrete blocks 26 incorporating expanded clay aggregate and cemented together at 51. The space between the inner and outer walls 25, 30 is filled with insulating material comprising an intermediate wall 40 of slabs made of calcium silicate and/or mineral and/or ceramic fibres and a layer 41 of cast in situ concrete 41 comprising expanded clay and high alumina cement. The furnace roof comprises a framework of girders 16, 17 which support cross beams 18. A lightweight refractory concrete ceiling 20, which is cast in situ, is suspended by suspension devices 21 from the cross beams 18. The edges of the concrete ceiling 20 are formed with recesses 20a, 20b.
