Abstract

1489918 Twisting or stranding filamentous elements YOSHIDA ENG CO Ltd 18 Oct 1974 [24 Oct 1973] 45195/74 Heading D1T A method of twisting or stranding a single or a plurality of filamentous elements comprises guiding the element or elements at constant speed through three spaced points; causing the middle one of said points to rotate always in the same direction about the axis of the element or elements; and periodically increasing at a constant rate of change and decreasing at a constant rate of change the rotational speed of the middle point about said axis. In Fig. 8 four wires W are paid off from bobbins 111 to 114 and are delivered via a tension controlling dancer roller device 18 to a twisting apparatus 1, 2, 6, 9 of the present invention. In this twisting apparatus the three spaced points are (1) the guide roller 6; (2) a hollow tube 2; and (3) a guide roller 9. Each tube 2 acts as the aforesaid third point and contains means which when the tube 2 rotates, will cause the wire passing therethrough to rotate with the tube 2. The tubes 2 are rotated with increasing and decreasing speeds to impart twist and back-twist to the wires. Thereafter the wires are bunched at a die 7 and pass on to a conventional double twist stranding apparatus 10. Fig. 13 shows the third point as being a tube 201 containing opposed rollers 203, 204 between which the wire W passes. Fig. 7 shows the third point as being a tube 12 containing spaced rollers 13, 14 over which the wire W passes in a back-and-forth manner. Fig. 4 shows how the speed may be in one direction only varying between No and zero. In Fig. 9 (not shown) the present invention is used for stranding groups of four wires W into quad-stranded bunches, collecting five of these bunches together and then stranding these together by means according to the present invention to form a five-fold quad cable.
