Abstract

Gyroscopic compasses. - Oscillations of the gyro-axis about an axis parallel to the meridian, due to rolling &c. of the ship, are restrained by the torque exerted by an auxiliary gyroscope having a vertical axis of rotation and carried by the compass mounting. The sensitive element a is mounted on horizontal pivots d in a ring e which is vertically pivoted within the follow-up ring f. The support i for the ring f is formed at its upper part as a housing r within which is mounted on pins q, at right-angles to the axis of the gyroscope a, the auxiliary gyroscope p having a vertical axis. The pins q may be rigid or they may be formed as pivots, in which case the gyroscope p carries a weight s, which may be slidable, in order to bring its centre of mass below the pivots q.
