148,989. Ges. fur Nautische Instrumente. June 4, 1917, [Convention date]. Addition to 148,963. Gyroscopic compasses.-Consists in the application of the invention described in the parent Specification to compasses having the axis of azimuth rotation of the steering-indicator or lubber mark unrestrained, the said axis being so connected to the gyro that it does not participate in the elevation motions of the gyro-axis, but moves therewith in a direction at right-angles to the movements of elevation. Fig. 2 shows a compass of the floating type in which the card R is carried by the gyro-casing K, the steering-indicator St being carried by the float chamber B. The centre of gravity S of the gyroscope is below its axis of rotation A. The chamber B carries a stirrup G to which is secured a pin F passing into a slot D between arms P<1> carried by the casing K. The slot extends at right-angles to the plane of the drawing so that the gyroscope can elevate without moving the pin F, hut moves therewith in the plane of the drawing. The auxiliary gyroscope P described in the parent Specification is mounted in a housing r carried by the chamber B.
