1489421 Burning coal in fluidized beds COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 20 March 1975 [22 March 1974] 12778/74 Heading F4B [Also in Division C5] Coal having at least some of its particles sized over ¢ inch but less than the bed depth is burnt in a fluidized bed, the bulk density of the expanded bed material being equal to or greater than the particle density of the coal. The bed may be 1 ft. or less in depth and the coal, which may be commercial small coal, or run-of-mine coal is delivered on to the surface of the bed, or if the coal contains a large proprotion of dust, below the surface of the bed, which is fluidized with an air velocity of 3-15 ft./sec. The bed material may be alumina, magnesia, silicon carbide or a sulphur acceptor such as calcined limestone or dolomite, or ash or sand.
