Abstract

1535168 Gas production EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 24 Nov 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 55373/74 Heading C5E [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] Equipment used in producing a substantially sulphur-free gas from a sulphur-containing fuel wherein the fuel is at least partially burnt in a sulphur-fixing bed of fluidized particles containing lime, is surface scoured by the addition of abrasive solid particles to the fluidized bed which solid particles become entrained in the substantially sulphur-free gas and pass through the equipment until removed in a cyclone. In this way the accumulation of material, e.g. condensed tars, is prevented through the equipment and the cyclone. As described the fluidized bed 10 leads via duct 15 to cyclone 16 where the entrained abrasive solids are removed and returned to bed 10, the sulphurfree gas venting at 18. Air or other oxygencontaining gas is passed via valve 13a into container 12 and sulphur-contaning fuel injected into the fluidized bed at 14. The sulphur content is removed by lime and the lime is regenerated by continual cycling of the fluidized bed to regenerator 23 which is supplied with air or an oxygencontaining gas to remove the sulphur content as SO 2 . Any particles entrained in the gases emerging from regenerator 23 are removed in cyclone 28. For removing particles from the sulphur-free gas two cyclones may be used for the coarser and finer particles, respectively. The abrasive material may be pulverized fuel ash, ash formed by partial burning of comminuted solid fuel, silica sand or silicon carbide.
