Abstract

1488157 Varistors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 50085/74 Heading ClJ [Also in Division HI] The sintered body 11A of a varistor 10A comprises a metal oxide mixed with at least one additive to form a medium 18A or 18B in which discrete metallic bodies 17A or 17B are distributed. The metallic bodies may be particles 17A as shown in Fig. 3, or they may comprise planar layers 17B, Fig. 4, laminated with the metal oxide medium 18B. The particles 17A may be sifted through meshes to obtain uniformity of size. The medium 18A or 18B if of ZnO with additives chosen from the oxides of Bi, Mn, Co, Sb, Ba, Ti, Li, Cr, Ge, Sn, Ni or Si. The metallic bodies may be of Bi, Sb, Ba, B, Ge, Si, Be, Sn, Cu, Gd, In, Se, Sr, Ta, Th, W, or the precious and transition metals. Sintering is at 800-1350‹ C.
