Abstract

1487778 Fuel injection nozzles ISUZU MOTORS Ltd 27 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973 28 Dec 1973 1 Aug 1974 (3)] 55942/74 Heading F1B A fuel injection device comprises an injection pipe 4 connected to nozzle holder 5 and a fuel flow passage through the pipe and holder, wherein the fuel flow passage is reduced in diameter in a direction toward the end of the nozzle holder to which a nozzle is to be attached, with the ratio of the smallest effective flow passage cross-sectional area of the fuel passage in the nozzle holder to that in the injection pipe being between 0À5 and 0À15 and the length of the passage in the nozzle holder being no greater than 90 times the diameter of the passage in the injection pipe so that fluctuation of fuel pressure in the injection pipe is converted to that of kinetic energy thereby to control abnormalities of fuel injection. Inlet pipe 4 is connected to nozzle holder 5 by adapter 52 which has a bore 53 leading to a smaller diameter bore 51 through which fuel flows to the injection nozzle. If the bore diameter of pipe 4 is D 1 , diameter of bore 53 is D 2 and diameter of bore 51 is D 3 , then either D 1 # D2 > D 3 or D 1 > D 2 # D 3 . The cross-sectional area of the bore 51 is 0À5 to 0À15 of the cross-sectional area of the inlet pipe 4. The length of the fuel oil passage 51 is 30 to 90 times the bore diameter of pipe 4. Construction. To form the long small bore passage 51, three methods are described:- (a) A plastics tube 55 in which the passage 51 has been drilled is inserted in a bore 54 in the nozzle holder. (b) A plastics material 55' is cast into bore 54 and subsequently drilled. (c) A plastics material is cast into bore 54 around a piano wire core which is subsequently removed.
