Abstract
1487565 Steel from granulated pig iron ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICH DUDELANGE SA 20 Sept 1974 [21 Sept 1973] 41140/74 Heading C7D Steel is manufactured by granulating (e.g. with water) liquid iron from a blast furnace, the granules then being pre-heated, melted and then refined, with oxygen and slag-forming additives, during which the slag is continuously removed. The preheating temperature is from 800 -900 C up to the softening temperature. The refining step may be carried out in a chamber, the oxygen (which may contain the additives) being supplied by lances; or by breaking up a falling stream of liquid metal with jets of oxidizing gas with entrained additives. The chamber may be of two parts, the first where the metal is refined by O 2 injected into it, and the second where the slag-metal emulsion from the first part separates out.
