Abstract

148,731. Alexander, A. E., (General Ceramics Co.). April 28, 1920. Forming silica-glass articles; pressing. - Relates to the manufacture of silica-glass sparking- plug insulators. Two rods 21, Fig. 2, of fused silica are rotated on their axes and heated until soft by an electric-arc furnace 20. A combustible core 19 of wood &c. mounted on swaging arms 17 is brought into the position shown by dotted lines, and mould halves 6, 7, having cutting-edges 11, are pressed together, as shown in Fig. 3. Unburnt portions of the core are subsequently drilled out and the usual electrode inserted. In a modification, a refractory core of platinum, tungsten, &c. is used and is withdrawn before the silica sets. A small quantity of flux may be used to promote the fusion of thesilica.
