Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture a quartz glass pipe of high quality by forming a porous glass sintered body at one end of a support rod by the hydrolysis or heat oxidation of glass forming starting material gas, boring a hole in the body along the central axis, and heating the body while feeding a halogen gas into the hole. CONSTITUTION:Glass forming starting material gas is fed into glass fine particle synthesizing torch 11 together with Ar gas and hydrolyzed with O2 gas and H2 gas to form rodlike porous glass sintered body 14 at the tip of quartz glass support rod 13 of rotating and raising unit 12. Drill 16 of boring unit 15 is raised while rotating to bore a hole in body 14 along the central line. Body 14 is then heated with electric furnace 17, and simultaneously it is dehydrated by introducing a halogen gas such as SOCl2, CCl4 or Cl2 from vitrifying atmosphere introducing port 18. Thus, hollow porous glass sintered body 14 is converted into a hollow transparent quartz glass pipe.
