Abstract
1487308 Cathode-ray tubes EMI Ltd 31 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 50650/73 Heading H1D [Also in Divisions H4J and H4X An ultrasonic radiation sensor which may form the faceplate of a TV camera tube or be secured to the faceplate of a camera tube by Canada balsam or other transparent adhesive comprises a plurality of acoustic transformers 2 (Fig. 1) for concentrating ultrasonic energy on to discrete areas 5 of a medium 1 sensitive to energy from such radiation. The acoustic transformers 2 comprise exponential horns 6. Alternatively the acoustic transformer are exponential apertures formed in a solid body (Fig. 2, not shown). The sensor preferably includes a liquid crystal 1 sandwiched between a transparent support 3, (which may be sealed in vacuum-tight manner to the envelope of the tube), and a membrane 4. The birefringance of the liquid crystal 1 is altered by the concentrated energy and this may be displayed using visible light shone from the direction of the ultrasonic energy, provided the acoustic transformers 2 are light transparent. The liquid crystals are only sensitive to ultrasonic energy above a threshold. The acoustic transformers 2 may be formed of glass, or of polystyrene, by casting or pressing using a die or mold.
