Abstract

148,715. James, J. Nov. 13, 1919. Rivet extracting and inserting tools.-A device for extracting and inserting the rivets of the driving-chains of bicycles, motor road vehicles &c. comprises a steel block a recessed on one face to receive the outer link plates c, e, e<1> of the chain, and formed with upstanding parts f between the recesses to support the inner link plates g, the block being provided with apertures k to receive the punched-out rivets. In its simplest form, Fig. 1, the rivets i are removed by a hammer and punch. In another form, Fig. 2, the block a is formed with a standard l in which is slidably mounted a block o operated by a screw n and carrying two pins q for expelling two rivets simultaneously. The chain is held by two screws r. In another form, Fig. 6, a standard l carries two screws t provided with pins u. In assembling the parts of the chain, the rivets carried by the lower outer link plate c are passed up through the links and the upper outer link plate j is pressed over the upper ends of the rivets by means of short tubes or thimbles v placed over the pins u.
