Description

Dec. 30, 1930. w. F. CLAY 1,787,358
'TOOL Filed July 21, 1928 jqz ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Dec. 30, 1930 UNITED STATES WALTER F. CLAY, F TEXARKANA, TEXAS TOOL Application filed July 21,
The object of this invention is the provision of a combination tool designed for use by automobile repairmen, and the primary object is the provision of a tool of this character which may be employed for cutting bolts, removing battery cables from their posts, riveting brake linings and removing generator bearings and gears, etc.
An important object of the invention is a novel construction of frames through which is guided a reversible rack bar that has both of its edges toothed, the said teeth being engaged by teeth on the segmental ends of handles which are, pivoted between the sides of the frame, and wherein the frame is of such construction as to have removably pivoted thereto different types of jaws which have link connections with the rack bar, as well as an anvil jaw which is designed to cooperate with a punch on one end of the rack bar, the said rack bar being reversibly arranged in the frame.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement also resides in certain other novel features of construction, combination and operative association of parts, satisfactory embodiments of which are disclosed by the drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with parts broken away.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the jaw employed and also disclosing the head for clinching a rivet which may be arranged on the jaw.
Inthe showing the frame of my improvement comprises two. side plates 1 between which there is arranged spacer or filler blocks 2, the side plates being secured to the filler blocks by removable means 3. As disclosed by the drawings thefiller plates are arranged in'spaced pairs adjacent to the opposite ends of the frame, and the confronting pairs of such plates are spaced equidistantly away from each other. The side members of the 7 frame, at the outer portion are formed with substantially U-shaped or yoke-like extensions. These yoke-like extensions are formed 1928. Serial No 294,474.
by cutting away the central portions of the plates 1, beyond the outer filler blocks 2. For distinction the connecting elements for the arms of the yoke-like extensions are indicated by the numeral t. I
The operating handles are indicated by the numeral 5, each of which merges into a segmental head 6 which is toothed, as at 7, and these heads are pivoted, as at 8, between the sides of the frame, and likewise between the spaced pairs of spacer blocks 2. Arranged for slidable movement through the frame, and guided in such movement by a slight contact with the blocks 2 there is a reversible rack bar 9. This rack bar has both of its edges toothed, as at 10, and these teeth are designed for engagement by the teeth on the segmental heads 6 of the actuating handles 5. The rack bar 9 has its sides or edges inwardly inclined, as at 11, to one end of the said rack bar, and removably fixed in this end of the rack bar there is a punch 12.
The slidable rack 9, adjacent to its second or opposite end is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed spaced openings 13.
, In Figure 1 an anvil jaw, illustrated by the perspective view in Figure 2 of the drawings, is employed. The jaw includes a reduced shank 27 which rests on one of the outer spacer blocks 2, the said shank having an opening 27 therethrough to register with the pivot openings in the yoke that receive therethrough one of the removable pivots 20. The widened outer portion of the jaw affords inner shoulders 28 which are designed to rest on the outer edges of the yoke, and this widened portion has its inner face concaved and from thence is formed with a right angle extension 29 that has an opening 30 therethrough in a line with the punch 12. The outer portion 29 of the j aws 28 affords an anvil for the punch as will, it is thought, be readily understood. The tool, when the parts are thus arranged is designed for punching holes through thin metal sheets, and driving out drift pins and for other purposes.
The construction and advantages of my improvement will, it is thought, be understood and appreciated so that further detailed description is not thought necessary. Obvious- 21 a i I j r 1,787,358
1y I do not Wish to be restricted to the precise details herein set forth and, therefore, hold *myself entitled to make such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what 5 I claim.
' Having described the invention, 1 claim: V In a tool for the purpose set forth, a frame comprising two spacedv plates, blocks a1;- ranged in spaced pairs between and renio'vably p 10 secured to the plates, each of said plates having its central portion cutaway beyond the;
outer blocks to provide the said plateswith yoke-like extensions, a rack having both of its u edges toothed, slidable between the'blocks 15 and yoke, a pair of handles eachhaving'a seg 1 l1 mental head which is toothed, and which are pivoted between the sides of the, frame, to engage with the teet'lio'f the rack, a punch on one end of the rack, a jaw having a reduced r-9 shank received through the yolre'a-nd resting upon one of the outer spacer blocks, removable means securing theshank to theyolie, f said jaw havingan outer widened portion which afiords inner shoulders that rest on 25 the outer edges of the yoke, the said'wider portion having its inner face concavedl and formed from thence with a right angular eX tension that has an opening therethrough in a'line with the punch r In testimony whereof I my signature.
